Vi skal finne summen av tre heltall $a$, $b$ og $c$ som tilfredsstiller
$(1) \;\; \tan 63^{\circ} = \sqrt{\sqrt{a} - \sqrt{b}} + \sqrt{\sqrt{c} - \sqrt{b}}$.
Får å løse dette problemet, vil vi anvende følgende fire trigonometriske formler/identiteter:
$(2) \;\; \tan 2\theta = \frac{2 \tan \theta}{1 - \tan^2 \theta}$,
$(3) \;\; \tan \theta = -\frac{1}{\tan(\theta - 90^{\circ})}$,
$(4) \;\; \cos 36^{\circ} = \frac{\sqrt{5} + 1}{4}$,
$(5) \;\; \sin 36^{\circ} = \frac{\sqrt{10 - 2\sqrt{5}}}{4}$.
Sett $x = \tan 63^{\circ}$. Da gir (2)
$(6) \;\; \tan 126^{\circ} = \frac{2x}{1 - x^2}$.
Ved å kombinere (3), (4) og (5), blir resultatet
$(7) \;\; \tan 126^{\circ} = -\frac{1}{\tan 36^{\circ}} = -\frac{\cos 36^{\circ}}{\sin 36^{\circ}} = -\frac{\sqrt{5} + 1}{\sqrt{10 - 2\sqrt{5}}}$.
Følgelig medfører (6) og (7) at
$\frac{2x}{x^2 - 1} = \frac{\sqrt{5} + 1}{\sqrt{10 - 2\sqrt{5}}}$,
eller alternativt
$(8) \;\; (\sqrt{5} + 1)x^2 - 2\sqrt{10 - 2\sqrt{5}} \:x - (\sqrt{5} + 1) = 0$.
Løsningen av andregradslikningen (8) er
$(9) \;\; x = \frac{2\sqrt{10 - 2\sqrt{5}} \: \pm \: d}{2(\sqrt{5} + 1)}$,
der $d$ er et ikke-negativt tall gitt ved
$d^2 = 2^2 \cdot \Big( \sqrt{10 - 2\sqrt{5}} \, \Big)^2 + 4(\sqrt{5} + 1 \big)^2 = 4[(10 - 2\sqrt{5}) + (6 + 2\sqrt{5})] = 4 \cdot 16 = 64 = 8^2$.
Altså er $d= 8$, som innsatt i (9) gir
$x = \frac{\sqrt{10 - 2\sqrt{5}} \: \pm \: 4}{\sqrt{5} + 1}$
$\;\; = \frac{(\sqrt{10 - 2\sqrt{5}} \: \pm \: 4)(\sqrt{5} - 1)}{(\sqrt{5} + 1)(\sqrt{5} - 1)}$
$\;\; = \frac{\sqrt{(10 - 2\sqrt{5})(\sqrt{5} - 1)^2} \: \pm \: 4(\sqrt{5} - 1)}{5 - 1}$
$\;\; = \frac{2\sqrt{(5 - \sqrt{5})(3 - \sqrt{5})} \: \pm \: 4(\sqrt{5} - 1)}{4}$,
i.e.
$(10) \;\; x = \sqrt{5 - 2\sqrt{5}} \: \pm \: (\sqrt{5} - 1)$.
I.o.m. at $x = \tan 63^{\circ} > \tan 60^{\circ} = \sqrt{3} > 1 > \sqrt{5 - 2\sqrt{5}}$, følger det av (10) at
$(11) \;\; \tan 63^{\circ} = \sqrt{5 - 2\sqrt{5}} \: + \: \sqrt{5} - 1$.
$(12) \;\; \tan 63^{\circ} = \sqrt{\sqrt{25} - \sqrt{20}} \: + \: \sqrt{\sqrt{36} - \sqrt{20}}$.
Dermed gir (1) og (12) at $(a,b,c) = (25,20,36)$. Ergo blir
$a + b + c = 25 + 20 + 36 = 81$.
$(1) \;\; \tan 63^{\circ} = \sqrt{\sqrt{a} - \sqrt{b}} + \sqrt{\sqrt{c} - \sqrt{b}}$.
